HOT TIP: SETTING UP R:BASE 4.0 WITH BOTH 286 AND 386 WORKSTATIONS
=======================================================================
PRODUCT: R:BASE VERSION : 4.0 ONLY
=======================================================================
AREA : GENERAL CATEGORY: MULTI-USER INSTALLATION
=======================================================================
Problem: "I've got both 386 and 286 machines connected to my
server and R:BASE version 4.0 won't run on a 286 machine. What
can I do?"
1. Create 3 separate directories on your network drive.
Example: F:\RBFILES
F:\RB386
F:\RB286
NOTE: The directories RB386 and RB286 may also be subdirectories
off the \RBFILES directory (F:\RBFILES\RB386 or
F:\RBFILES\RB286).
2. Install all the program files (both versions) into the
directory F:\RBFILES.
3. Copy RBASE.EXE into the directory F:\RB386.
NOTE: The directory F:\RB386 will have only one file in
it. RBASE.EXE (386 version)
4. Copy RBASE.286 into the directory F:\RB286 and
rename it RBASE.EXE.
NOTE: The directory F:\RB286 will have only one file in
it. RBASE.EXE.
5. Change Directory to F:\RBFILES and rename RBASE.EXE to RBASE.386.
This changes it from being an executable file and thus prevents it
from trying to run on 286 computers.
Directory structure:
F:\RBFILES F:\RB386 F:\RB286
=========================================
RBASE.386 RBASE.EXE RBASE.EXE
RBASE.286
What to do next:
================
386 machines
------------
Set up the path for each 386 workstation so it includes
F:\RB386 and F:\RBFILES. (Do not include F:\RB286 in the path
of the 386 workstations).
Example: PATH=F:\RB386;F:\RBFILES...
286 machines
------------
Set up the path for each 286 workstation so it includes
F:\RB286 and F:\RBFILES only. (Do not include F:\RB386 in the
path of the 286 workstations).
Example: PATH=F:\RB286;F:\RBFILES...
REMINDER: Don't forget to set up SERVER.SY5 in F:\RBFILES and
individual RBASE.CFG files for each user. See the article "The Ins
and Outs of Multi-User Installation" in this issue of the Exchange.
