The installation program we use to install R:Base on your computer
does a good job most of the time. However, there are some situations
that can cause the installation to fail. If you encounter problems
installing R:Base 5.5 for Windows, perform the following steps:
What To Do
1. Delete the RBWIN directory. Do not use the "Uninstall" utility
from the R:Base program disks.
2. At the DOS prompt, type SET and press [ENTER]. You should see a
SET TEMP=(directory) line. Make sure that the directory specified
by SET TEMP is completely empty of:
a. files that begin with a tilde (~)
b. files with a .TMP extension.
3. In the Windows File Manager ("Windows Explorer" in Win95), go to
the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. Look for a WIN32S subdirectory.
If it exists, delete it. Also look for any files beginning with
WIN32S or W32. If any such files exist, delete them.
4. Still in Windows File Manager ("Windows Explorer" in Win95), look
in the C:\WINDOWS and the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directories for files
beginning with ODBC. If you find any such files, copy them to a
floppy (or otherwise back them up) and then delete them from both
directories.
5. Make sure you have no programs running in the background,
especially anti-virus programs.
6. When you have completed all of the above steps, try installing
R:Base again. If it still will not install properly, make a note
of any error messages you encounter and call MICRORIM technical
support.
Why You Do It
1. This step gets rid of any R:Base program files that might have been
installed. It will allow you to reinstall on a "clean slate."
2. The installation program writes several temporary files to the TEMP
directory. If that directory is not empty, the installation
program may encounter a file it cannot overwrite, resulting in a
failed installation.
3. If the installation program encounters any WIN32S files already on
your hard drive, it might not overwrite them. This can cause
problems later in the installation routine.
4. If the installation program encounters any ODBC files already on
your hard drive, it might not overwrite them. This can cause
problems later in the installation routine.
5. Programs running in the background, especially anti-virus software,
can interfere with the installation program's ability to write
files to your hard disk.
6. In general, steps 1-5 will create a "clean" environment in which
the installation program can operate. Please call tech support if
any of these steps are unclear or if your installation problems
persist.
Thank you for using R:Base!
