Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the difference between R:BASE 7.5 and R:BASE Turbo V-8?
A: The key difference is the engine. In R:BASE Turbo V-8, the database engine has been enhanced on every possible level to meet the requirements of R:BASE users with great amounts of data. The graphic user interface between the two R:BASE versions is very similar, however many previous product limitations have been greatly exceeded. The engine has also been enhanced to comply with future 64-bit software versions. Please review the R:BASE Product Comparison for more details.
Q: If R:BASE Turbo V-8 is available, why would anyone purchase R:BASE 7.5?
A: R:BASE Turbo V-8 is for database users which have very large amounts of data (millions of table records) and those that require SQL ODBC connections with DBS, Oracle, or SQL Server. Future releases of R:BASE Turbo V-8 will also be supported for 64-bit operating systems. If you do not foresee any database growth that would exceed 2GB, then R:BASE 7.5 would be the appropriate version.
Q: I'm using the current version of R:BASE 7.5 for Windows. Will there be any conversion required?
A: Yes. You must use the TURBO command at the R> to convert your database files into the new file format from RB1-RB4 to RX1-RX4. The conversion process will create a new database.
Q: I'm using the current version of R:BASE 7.1 for Windows. Will there be any conversion required?
A: Yes. You must use the TURBO command at the R> to convert your database files into the new file format from RB1-RB4 to RX1-RX4. The conversion process will create a new database.
Q: I'm using the current version of R:BASE 2000, 6.5++, Build:1.866xRT03 for Windows. Will there be any conversion required?
A: Yes. You must use the TURBO command at the R> to convert your database files into the new file format from RB1-RB4 to RX1-RX4. The conversion process will create a new database. Then, you will have to step through your fully functional 6.5++ for Windows Forms, Reports and Labels using the built-in Conversion utilities to complete the process. Once converted, you can take advantage of additional features and controls, but your original Forms, Reports and Labels should be as intact as possible.
Q: Currently, I'm not using R:BASE 2000 (ver 6.5++) for Windows. But, I plan to upgrade to R:BASE Turbo V-8 for Windows. Do I need to upgrade to R:BASE 2000 (ver 6.5++) first?
A: If you are planning to upgrade from previous versions to R:BASE Turbo V-8 for Windows, your best option is to first upgrade to R:BASE 2000 (ver 6.5++) for Windows, convert and fine tune all your Forms, Reports and Labels, and make sure that everything is working accordingly. Then, upgrading to R:BASE Turbo V-8 for Windows will be a breeze. Once in R:BASE Turbo V-8, you can take advantage of all advanced features. There is a copy of R:BASE 2000 (ver 6.5++) for Windows included specifically for this purpose.
Q: Why can't I upgrade directly to R:BASE Turbo V-8 from older versions?
A: R:BASE Turbo V-8 for Windows Forms, Reports and Label advanced parser will only read the working data from SYS_FORMS2, SYS_REPORTS2 and SYS_LABELS2 to convert to SYS_FORMS3, SYS_REPORTS3 and SYS_LABELS3 accordingly. Your Forms, Reports and Labels must be fully functional and tested in R:BASE 2000 (ver 6.5++) for Windows before you convert to R:BASE Turbo V-8 for Windows.
Q: Can I still use the same database with R:BASE 2000 (ver 6.5++) and R:BASE Turbo V-8?
A: No. The RX1-RX4 database file extension is specific for the R:BASE Turbo V-8 program.
Q: Why is a conversion of my existing forms, reports and labels necessary?
A: More advanced and up-to-date tools and designers are used in R:BASE Turbo V-8 for Windows. All previous Forms, Reports and Labels MUST be adapted to this new process.
