MURRYSVILLE, Pa. --- R:BASE Technologies, Inc. of Murrysville, Pennsylvania, announced today that it has acquired complete ownership of R:BASE database technology and products from Abacus Software Group, Inc. The definitive agreement and closing documents were signed this morning in Seattle, Washington.
According to R:BASE Technologies, Inc. CEO, Dr. A. Razzak Memon, the new company will begin already scheduled operations on June 15, 1998. When the company commences business operations, all manufacturing, web servers, technical support, and new sales staff will be located in Murrysville, PA.
Abacus Software Group, Inc. signed a letter of intent on May 8, 1998, to sell the database technology formerly operated by Microrim, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Abacus Software Group, to RAM Data Systems, Inc. of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
According to Dr. Memon, "Our first commitment to the R:BASE community is to be able to provide products once again. Our second commitment is to re-establish an R:BASE presence in the general community. We will be providing our vision of the future."
Dr. Memon said that R:BASE Technologies, Inc. will fully utilize the web site database management capabilities of the R:BASE Oterro SQL Engine, enabling World Wide Web based ordering, technical support and more.
He also emphasized that R:BASE product development would continue, with new releases being planned in the future. He said that the R:BASE developer community would be involved in future planning. "We are committed to working with the R:BASE developer community. As a developer myself, I understand developers' needs."
Distribution Channels and International Distributors are being evaluated. An authorized list of International Distributors will be announced very shortly.
According to Dr. Memon, some of the talent from the former Microrim, Inc. will continue to be involved with R:BASE Technologies, Inc., including Wayne J. Erickson, founder of Microrim, and Michael Dunn, former Test Manager of Microrim.
Microrim, Inc. was founded in 1981 by Wayne J. Erickson, who had led a technical team at Boeing Computer Services, which produced one of the first database management systems based on the relational model, Relational Information Manager or RIM. Microrim's R:BASE was the first microcomputer implementation of a RIM-like database system, and was the result of Erickson and others recognizing the significance of the emerging personal computer market, and the need for a PC DBMS based on the relational model.

His consulting services and solutions extend all over the United States from small size companies and educational institutions to the U.S. Government. He is also the President/CEO of RAM Data Systems, Inc., and CEO of R:BASE Database Training Institute, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
